[ He's not exactly surprised by the sleeping on the floor thing, considering everything else she's told him about Jakku, but it still hurts to read it. Her life just keeps getting shittier with every new detail. ]
sounds like there's a whole lotta new shit to get accustomed to, here. should just take some time. and if time doesn't help, fuck it, sleep on the floor and if anyone gives you shit about it, tell them it's none of their business. probably better for your back anyway.
[ He smiles reading the bit about being amazing, thinking privately that it's a clear-cut case of Rey just having depressingly low standards, but he doesn't know how to say that without it sounding like an insult, so he says instead.]
no worries you're pretty amazing, too.
if it's not weird, what with me being kinda your boss and everything, we should go to a movie sometime see if you like them we might not have had interplanetary travel back in my world but we sure as shit were good at movies
[ Really, she had very low standards because she had very little to go on. There was much of anything on Jakku, including kindness. It was such a rarity there and though she should have turned bitter about her situation, she hadn't. Nor was Cisco, seemingly anyway, pitying her. ]
A lot of things to get used to and figure out. I still need to check out the library.
I will, don't worry. :) I don't think there's anyone else here but me. Probably wrong and I just don't see them. Maybe they're super busy or something.
[ Its ...a bit weird that he wants to go to a 'movie' with her. He wants to spend time outside of work and that was fine. It's not like he wanted to be friends...right? Could that work? Having a friend for a boss or a boss for a friend? ]
What's a movie?
[ She'll ask that and depending on what it is, she'll determine if it's weird to hang around Cisco for it. ]
have you heard of... plays or anything like that? where there's a story and people act it out?
it's like that, only recorded on video, and with music and special effects to make it seem closer to reality. and they show them in theaters, which are basically just big quiet rooms with lots of chairs, and a really big screen, where they play the video.
holo-vid sounds like it's probably similar? maybe? i don't know, never seen one. holograms are like super cutting edge tech in my time. i know that's gotta sound hilariously old fashioned to you probably.
they're so much fun like... as escapism, you know? you get to watch and just imagine different worlds, imagine living different lives, etc.
More than likely they're one in the same. Different technology.
They are? They're pretty standard.
It's not old fashion, but it's hard to picture? I don't know, there weren't holo-novels on Jakku, or a library. Coruscant, another planet, was the hub of a lot of information a long time ago, but I don't know about now.
A momentary distraction to forget about the world around you..that I understand.
coruscant is such a dope name for a planet. it's hard for me to picture a desert planet full of old spaceships so feeling's mutual
yep, exactly i watched movies all the time as a kid dreaming of being somewhere... well, somewhere more like this with mysteries and adventure and strange awesome people in it
Do you holograms for maps too? Or is it for communication?
Is it? I never gave it much thought. There are other planets like Hoth that's all ice and snow, complete opposite of Jakku.
I used to dream of flying...being elsewhere, and doing something different. [Being reunited with her family, playing with the little doll she made of a Rebellion fighter, or trying on an old Rebellion Pilot's helmet...just for fun. No need to mention any of that, it's a bit too personal for her.]
What was your world like? Fast pace? Changing constantly? Or did it stay the same?
they're not in widespread use like you can't buy one or anything i sort of invented one and used to recreate a really old crime scene we were trying to investigate and once someone used a hologram to convince a bunch of people there were two people in a room where there was only one
all good things to dream about. 👍🏽
hmm, good question hard to know how to describe it honestly. moderate paced? not as interesting as this place. or as kind. a lot more violence and people screwing each other over, and prejudice and bullshit. i guess changing constantly? especially recently. about a year and a half ago there was an accident - this particle accelerator exploded in the middle of the city, and it ended up giving a bunch of people superpowers like... the ability to run faster than the speed of sound, or control the weather, or teleport, stuff like that so things got a little more interesting after that...
Wow, that's...incredible. You'll find the more you use holograms, it's difficult to do much else. It's very interactive, especially if you're trying to make a chart, or need to look at a map. It's all at your fingertips.
What else have you invented?
So people worked, then went home and did it all over again? That's what I'm imagining. But people with powers? That sounds like it could be a good and bad thing. Good, if they're willing to use their powers for help, and bad if it's the opposite.
Is there anyone to train them on how to use their gifts?
oh this and that i don't really keep a list i guess if i'm just picking a random one - power dampeners. devices that cancel out a metahuman's powers within a certain range.
you're right on the working thing. with a little bit of fun in there, too.
and you pretty much nailed it re: good and bad. you get heroes like the flash (the one who can run way fast) saving people from burning buildings, preventing catastrophes, all that but there's plenty of metas who just use their powers to steal, or hurt people and then the flash has to stop them, too.
not really? people just sorta gotta figure it out on their own.
[ That last question does strike Cisco as an unusual thing to focus in on, but he doesn't comment on it, for now. ]
But how could you not have a list? That's essential, I would think! To know which inventions you've created and make sure they're doing what they're supposed to do..or, I don't know, do other things?
Does this flash have anyone to help them--no, wait, they have you. You made those..things that stop the metahumans. [Getting sleepy, but her mind is still at it, connecting the dots here and there.] So you're a hero then?
Trial and error, then? Makes sense, especially if no one else is around to help and you're stuck there wondering what else you could do.
[And her mind goes back to Obi-Wan and she....she has no idea where to go with that. If she should ask him what she should do...but wouldn't that be like training her? no, he said he would guide her and that would be it--which is frustrating, but that's something for another day.]
[ Rey kind of has a point about the list - professionally it's something he should very much have, it's just that most of his inventions have not been planned in advance, but have been thrown together secretly, in a huge hurry, in life or death situations. ]
you got a point, i should come up with a list...
i wouldn't call myself a hero, no. i wasn't the one out there on the front lines, you know? i mean shit got dangerous occasionally sure but i was just on his team. i helped a hero.
yeah... pretty much. i mean, when the flash was learning to use his powers, my friends and i helped him out, but we weren't teachers exactly, just kind of there to provide support.
[ Well, Eobard had been exactly like a teacher, but also fuck him. ]
i get the impression it's scary for a lot of metas. all of sudden they have these powers, and even if they know they're from the particle accelerator, they don't know how to use them or sometimes... not use them, if they want. there were a couple of sad cases - a woman who turned everything she touched into a bomb, a guy who electrocuted people who got too close to him. it was pretty bad, for them, with no one to turn to. and other metas who didn't understand what was happening to them and just thought that were going crazy, because they didn't realize they had powers.
[ ...That very last example is, well, Cisco himself, but Rey doesn't need to know that. She's a nice girl but he's not about to go telling her he's a meta. He's getting a little more accepting of his powers, but he's not there, yet. ]
Still sounds like you're a hero, or at a least part of a team. When someone is trying to learn a new skill, they need help..support--a lot of support.
[So not drawing a parallel to herself, nope. And she's starting to get a little bit sleepy, reading and then rereading a few of the words. This is helping her take her mind off things. ]
I think you're right, it would be scary to go from doing something you normally do and having it drastically change. Then trying to control it and failing again and again until you want to run away or do something else--be something else. It's a bit sad to know they don't have a group like The Flash does, to help them.
They don't have a friend like you to help them.
[Oh boy, did she really call him a friend? Could a friend be a boss? Ahhh, did she over step her boundries?]
very true. i never understood the whole go-it-alone thing. everyone needs help now and then.
we did try to help them. bette and farooq - those metahumans i mentioned, with the bombs and the electricity. but we failed. both times. farooq was too far gone, too angry, and bette was murdered before we really got a chance to try properly.
[ But there's definitely something odd about the way she is fixating on this. He doesn't assume that it is powers (mostly because in his experience, almost everybody in this place who has powers is shockingly open about them.) But he is starting to wonder... ]
did something like that ever happen to you? a big change that made you feel like you had to run away and be a new person?
[ It's not a very risky guess - most people here felt very alienated and were looking for escape, just before showing up through the portal. Cisco's learned that well by now. ]
Edited (sorry to edit so often, dw keeps messing with the formatting) 2017-10-02 19:24 (UTC)
Sometimes, there's no one to ask for help. And even then, if you're used to being on your own, it's hard to consider the notion.
[His question makes Rey pause. She wasn't nodding off, not yet, but she couldn't tell him. She didn't want him to be involved with what she's in, just in case the First Order ever came through here--one never knew. And, she wasn't ready to discuss that vision, that moment where her life changed.]
The biggest change for me would be...being here. Being stuck here, and trying to get back to where I'm supposed to be and other things.
That's why I was at the park when we met. A lot going through my head.
[So...sort of yes? And sort of no, but not giving details...and he didn't seem to flinch or bring up the whole 'friend' part.]
that's true. i guess that's why... i try to be that someone who people can ask for help, if they get to that point. which i guess is a little arrogant, maybe, but it's important to me.
[ Cisco accepts her explanation, not necessarily convinced, but also not entirely unconvinced. The transition to this place had clearly been a much bigger leap for her, and he's willing to buy that she might feel this way as a result. Besides, he recognizes that if there were some life change, some event that had precipitated her arrival here, it is probably very personal and not his business. ]
hey, listen, i know it's gotta suck being stuck for right now, but for what it's worth, i'm sure you'll get home eventually, if that's what you want. they send people back when they can.
[ He is still not commenting on the friend thing, so it would seem that he definitely does not mind. ]
A bit arrogant, but not in the harmful sense. Not too arrogant to know you're being arrogant.
You want to help, not many people want to do that.
[It is very personal and she's not ready to say anything of the like. She doesn't want to put him in the line of fire, and the last time she brought up anything of the First Order, of Luke Skywalker...it didn't go well. Which reminds her, she'll need to figure out a way to talk to Obi-Want again...that'll be fun.]
It's the 'eventually' part that has me concerned. How many days, months or years it'll take before that happens, or if it does, how much time in my world will have past?
i'm no expert on how the portals work, but i kinda got the idea that once they find people's worlds they can send them back to the moment they took them from? so you wouldn't have missed anything
it's true though you don't know how long it'll be before your number comes up
Kind of gives me hope, but we'll see what happens.
[Because, knowing her luck, she'll be dropped back (assuming that actually happens), and it'll be too late. No Master Luke...the Resistance destroyed...]
like i said i'm not an expert but there's people who show up here from all different points in their timeline it's not like every day here equals a day there
i was thinking maybe the evening after our trip on friday? i'll have to see what's playing you can invite friends if you want, the more the merrier
[ Cisco doesn't know if she has any friends here, but he wants to make sure she knows it's an open invitation. ]
What about people who have been here before? People who were here, then taken back to their world and...dropped back here? Has that happened before?
I could ask Poe--Poe Dameron. He's from my world. I could ask him. I'm sure he hasn't seen a movie before either. Or maybe he has.
[Look! One friend! That's totally not sad or anything...cause yeah, Cisco's been one of the few people she's been talking to a lot...and by that she means more than once.]
i really wish i could help, but i've honestly got no clue. maybe somebody at the magic institute? or someone who works with the portal?
she's awesome. i bet you two would get along like a house on fire.
[ A private joke to himself, considering how very much Lup likes all things flame-related. ]
i'll invite her and you can meet her. it took me a while to meet people, too. the first month i pretty much just stuck around the one guy i knew from my world.
