[ The way he says that - "Odo to Cisco" - instead of "Hello, is this Cisco, it's Odo" or anything like that is peculiar. Easy enough to understand, but just not the sort of thing Cisco expects, in his inbox. He can roll with it, though. ]
I'm totally available, and I'll do my best, though I can't make you any promises until I know some deets. What did you have in mind?
[ Some time soon after her picnic with Magnus, Angela goes storming off towards where she knows Cisco's workshop to be, pounding on the door with her fists, furious. ]
[ The pounding on the door was enough to startle Cisco, who had been working away on his gauntlets, feeling quite contented. The shouting that followed after made things exponentially worse. Despite the rage in it, there was no mistaking Angela's voice, and it didn't take much to put two and two together.
There was some temptation to not answer the door, to pretend he wasn't here, or make a hasty retreat. But then, what would be the point of that? Angela knows where he works, and this place isn't big enough to avoid someone for very long. So, heart pounding hard, shaking faintly but keeping his head held high, Cisco fired off a quick text to Eddie (just in case) and then threw open the door. ]
[Taako told Rin about this, and no one else because he figures all his friends will know it's bullshit, but just before they post their little video, Taako remembers that Cisco was betrayed by someone he trusted who'd been secretly evil all along, and has a moment of compassion.]
If you check the network in the next ten minutes don't take anything too seriously, yeah?
[It's either late or early, depending on when someone thinks an acceptable bed time is, and Taako hasn't been able to sleep for hours, because something's bothering him.
It's been bothering him for a while, but he's tried to ignore it. That's not quite working anymore, so he finally decides to actually like, fucking talk about it.]
Have I made it too easy for Lucretia?
[He doesn't want to ask Lup or Magnus, because they did make it easy for her. And he's not sure if this is the kind of convo he wants to have with Rin.
Cisco is a safe bet, he understands this shit better than most, for a whole lot of reasons.]
[ Cisco, for once, had not already been awake when he hears the faint buzz of his phone on the nightstand. When he sees that it is from Taako, he almost rolls over and goes back to sleep, assuming it is a joke or a meme or any of the other many harmless things that Taako texts him on a daily basis. But some instinct compels him to look, and when he reads the text, he's glad that he did.
He slips out of bed quietly, knowing that this is going to be a Talk. ]
i think you wouldn't be asking that question if some part of you didn't feel like the answer's yes are you ok? did something happen? want me to come over?
[ The world looks cold and still out the window, but Cisco will drag his butt outside if Taako needs him. ]
[ Cisco immediately senses that there's something wrong: possibly because he has some kind of sixth sense for these things, or maybe just because Cisco always assumes there is something wrong and is bound to be right some small fraction of times. ]
things are great. working on my gauntlets. what's up? everything good?
[ Finn is trying to sound moderately casual and like a man who has had conversations like this many times before. As a person who doesn't tend to relax often and who's recently gone right back up on edge, it doesn't totally take. He doesn't sound panicked or overly urgent, either, just maybe very focused.
There's a comfort to having even the beginnings of a game plan. ]
So you're an inventor. Right? An engineer.
[ He knows for a fact that he's heard it from both Rey and Cisco himself. They have both actively told him this. But look okay he's got a game plan. Gotta confirm at every stage. ]
[ Cisco hadn't been expecting to hear from Finn, but when he does, and when Finn's greeting is a bit more solemn than social niceties dictate, it doesn't surprise him all that much. He sets aside what he'd been working on and answers right away. ]
[ Poe sounds a little tired, but otherwise calm. ]
Rey won't be in to work for a bit. [ A pause. ] There's really no good way to say she's in the hospital, but she's in the hospital. She's going to be fine--she... we weren't keeping a good enough eye on her. She got sick, wasn't taking care of herself.
[ It's not like Cisco hadn't noticed that Rey's been a bit absent, recently, but he'd assumed that the best way to deal with it was to leave her alone; he knows her, knows that any concern he might express could be misinterpreted as a criticism, that he might heap on more worry that she wasn't doing her job well enough and could be in trouble. ]
Sick? What does she have - what happened?
[ Cisco's voice is clipped and there's the sound of various commotion in the background, which is absolutely Cisco pulling on his coat and getting ready to rush out the door to the hospital. ]
A box is left addressed to Cisco, wrapped in bright Christmas paper and with a big bow on top, the tag says it's from S♥uth. Inside, Cisco will find a few pages of sketches and water paints. A couple are just of Eddie, various angles, including one from the lumber jack competition. One is of Cisco and Eddie together, from the torso up, like they're sharing a hot chocolate. The last one is simply of the lovely lights that are over the night sky. It also has a matching set of mittens, beanie, and scarf (the pattern on it is of circuitry, of course, for the nerd), along with a box of chocolates.
[ Cisco is about halfway through typing a fairly humorous and flippant reply before he pauses, reading the text again. On a second look, he really can't tell whether the tone here is meant to be light, or whether the fact that Tony is prefacing so much before he gets to the point is a sign that it's something a lot more serious. So he deletes what he's written already, goes for something simpler. ]
How do you feel about cards? Playing cards, that is. The greeting cards I've seen about are endearing, but dreadfully lacking in purpose in this context. And good evening, by the way. How are things?
[For once, this text comes at a normal time of day! Or what's normal for a person with a regular sleeping schedule who doesn't have (had) a nocturnal boyfriend. Which is to say its like 10am but Taako hasn't actually slept in the last 12 hours or so. No one needs to know that.]
Hey, my man. I know you and Rin were like, kinda friends? Wanted to give you a heads up that he's gone home.
[super casual. super chill. he super knows that Cisco is going to see right through it]
[ Well, shit. Double shit with shit on the side. Cisco knows that this is just Taako, giving him the heads up that his boyfriend is gone, and that it has little to nothing to do with Cisco's own tentative friendship with Rin. But he lets Taako keep up the pretense, because pointing it out or arguing with it would be needlessly cruel. So, he thinks, would be asking questions about Taako's emotions, or worse expressing sympathy. So instead he just asks, simply: ]
thanks for letting me know. what do you need?
[ It's as neutral as he can put it, to let Taako be the one who makes the call here. 'Need' isn't ideal, as phrasings go, but it's the best he can come up with. ]
[ Cisco is very hungover. Cisco is regretting all of his life choices right now. Cisco does NOT remember his conversation with Lup last night in which he'd requested a magic blowtorch for his birthday. ]
[It's not the first time that Taako has sent this particular gif. It might not even be the last. But it is a good way to lead into the conversation that he'd like to have.]
[ This is the sort of text that would be unexpected from anybody, but in particular from Magnus. ]
can't say that i do you doing okay mags? did you take something or is it just existential crisis o'clock? what's got you on the contemplate the fabric of reality train?
My name is Dr. Rodney McKay and I got your contact information from one of the Perimeter Guard Handbooks. It mentioned that you are the one to call for advanced tech related to search and rescue outside the walls.
What would you recommend for safely stunning and detaining and/or restraining a person with heightened strength, agility, and a highly-efficient ability to regenerate damage? I'm hoping to capture the person in question without harming him so he can be treated.
[ Cisco doesn't recognize the username, and of course doesn't have any idea this is one of the anonymous advice-seekers who he'd responded to; he reads through the long, formal text message before replying: ]
just cisco is fine, thanks i can definitely help with that sounds like quite the situation are you looking for a long-distance solution? i've got power-dampening handcuffs that ought to restrain your guy just fine but i'm not gonna front: they're not really easy to put on somebody if they're struggling not unless you've got super speed?
sounds like you're gonna have to stun him first mind if i ask what you mean by 'treated'? and what kind of situation you've got going on? i believe you about being in the guard and all but you gotta understand i can't just hand out weapons to anybody that comes asking
[ As one of the few people Yuri thought deserving of a personal, printed invitation, he stopped by when he knew the other was unlikely to be home. He hoped it would be something of a surprise.
The envelope was matte black with a raised, glossy black leopard print texture imprinted on it that caught when shifted in the light. On the front were Eddie and Cisco's names embossed in gold. The envelope was tucked carefully into the corner of the door frame, so that it couldn't be missed whenever either one of them walked inside.
Within the envelope was a single piece of heavy glossy cardstock; the photos Yuri and Otabek had chosen on one side, and on the other, the details of their wedding. In places there was more of the raised golden embellishments. So extra. ]
